Marching Out Ceremony – Saint Bricin’s Military Hospital

On Wednesday, 24th June 2026, the Marching Out Ceremony took place for Saint Bricin’s Military Hospital. ARCO was represented by its President, Major-General Maureen O’Brien DSM. DCOS (Sp), Major-General Colm Ó Luasa was the senior serving officer attending. It was a sad occasion for many of those attending as they had served there for decades. However, It was also an occasion to meet colleagues they had worked with in the past.

Since opening its doors in 1913, St. Bricin’s Hospital has occupied a unique place within the history of military medicine in Ireland. Originally established as the King George V Military Hospital, it has stood through some of the most significant events in our nation’s history. The hospital has witnessed the final years of British administration, the Easter Rising, the War of Independence, the Civil War, the establishment of the Irish State, and the evolution of the Defence Forces. For generations, members of the Medical Corps have passed through its wards, clinics, and offices. Within these walls, they learned their profession, developed their expertise, cared for those in need, and upheld the highest traditions of military service.

The Ceremony included a history of the Hospital, an address by DCOS (Sp) and prayers by the Defence Forces Head Chaplain.

The National Anthem was played by the Army No 1 Band, followed by the lowering of the National Flag, and the march out of the Hospital grounds.
