A Commemoration Ceremony to remember Lieutenant Aonghus Murphy was held in Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa, on Saturday 15th August 2026. Aonghus was killed on 21st August 1986 by an Improvised Explosive Device while leading a patrol from B Company, 59 Infantry Battalion UNIFIL, on the At Tiri to Haddatha Road in Southern Lebanon. He was just twenty-five years old.
There was a very large attendance at the ceremony, and the Garrison Church was filled to capacity for the Mass, which was celebrated by Father Paul Murphy CF DSM. Members of Aonghus’ family were in attendance.
The Mass was followed by the laying of wreaths in the nearby Memorial Garden. Captain Tony Doonan, a classmate of Aonghus from 56 Cadet Class, laid a wreath on behalf of ARCO. Lieutenant-Colonel Mary Carroll planted a Sorbus Olympic Flame sapling, grown by her husband Henry, in the Memorial Garden in memory of Aonghus and all members of Óglaigh na hÉireann who lost their lives on service with the United Nations.
May they Rest in Peace

As is the tradition following Military Ceremonies, refreshments were served afterwards in the Barracks which allowed family, classmates, hosts, and guests to share memories of Aonghus.
