Peter Daly, a native of County Offaly, was born on 21st September 1940 and enlisted in the Defence Forces as a member of 34 Cadet Class on 25th January 1960. He was commissioned into the Infantry Corps as a Second-Lieutenant on 11th December 1961. Peter served in the Southern Command for much of his career, in particular 12 Infantry Battalion and 22 Infantry Battalion FCA. He served overseas with the United Nations as a Lieutenant Platoon Commander with B Company, 3 Infantry Group in Cyprus from July 1964 to January 1965. He was Chief Operations Officer with UNIFIL in 1992. Peter served in the Balkans with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) during his military career and after he retired.

The Offaly Senior Football Team of 1961: Front l-r: Sean Brereton, Charlie Wrenn, Harry Donnelly, Willie Nolan, John Egan, Mick Brady, Tommy Greene. Back l-r: Greg Hughes, Peter Daly, Paddy McCormack, Mick Casey, Phil O’Reilly, Donie Hanlon, Sean Ryan, Tommy Cullen.

Peter was a member of the Offaly Senior Football Team that met Down in the 1961 All Ireland Final, losing by just one point. The match, played on 24th September of that year, saw the biggest crowd ever to attend a match in Croke Park with an official attendance of 90,556. When you consider that in 1961 the population of Down was 266,939 and that of Offaly just 51,533, this attendance represents over 28% of the combined population of both counties. Peter was one of the few Cadets to have played in an All Ireland Senior Championship final. He had celebrated his 21st birthday just three days earlier. Another was Éamonn Goulding, 28 Cadet Class 1953-1955, who was on the winning Cork side which defeated Wexford in the 1954 Senior Hurling Championship final.

Peter’s remains will arrive at Clarecastle Church, on Tuesday, 20th December for Funeral Mass at 12 noon, followed by cremation service in Shannon Crematorium at 2 pm. House Private, Please.
