ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Commodore Joseph Anselm (Joe) Deasy of Monkstown, County Cork and formerly of Dungarvan, County Waterford. On 3rd May 2021, peacefully, surrounded by his loving family and in the wonderful and kind care of the staff at Cramer’s Court Nursing Home. Dearly beloved husband of Carmel (née Fleming), cherished father of Orla, Conor, Carol Anne and Susan, dear brother of Fr. Billy, Pat and the late June, Lt Col Declan (19 Cadet Class 1945/47), Eilish and Austin. Lovingly remembered by his wife and family, sons-in-law Eddie and Phil and his adored grandchildren Milly, Emmie Jane, Patrick and Rory, extended family, neighbours, Defence Forces colleagues and friends.

Joe Deasy was born in Dungarvan, County Waterford where his father, who was a member of An Garda Síochána and a War of Independence Veteran, was stationed. He was a member of 4 Naval Cadet Class and was the first member of the Naval Service to complete a diving course in Britain in the early 1960s. Throughout his career he was a leading advocate and supporter of the Naval Service Diving Section. Having held many sea and shore appointments he was Flag Officer Commanding Naval Service from 1990 to 1993 and steered the ship through challenging waters at that time which included the Gleeson Commission and the introduction of representation.
A private family funeral will take place, in accordance with current guidelines. Joe’s family thank you for your co-operation and understanding at this difficult time.
