ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Peter Archbold of Sycamore Springs, Sallins Road, Naas and formerly of Ballitore, County Kildare on the 24th of January 2023. Sadly missed by his loving son Robert, daughter Emer and their mother Claire, daughter-in-law Orla, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and Defence Forces colleagues.

Peter Archbold was born on 22nd August 1943 in Ballitore, County Kildare. He enlisted in the Defence Forces on 24th March 1962 and served in An Chéad Cathlán Coisithe in Galway. While serving he was awarded a Cadetship and entered the Cadet School on 2nd October 1962 as a member of 37 Cadet Class. Peter was commissioned into the Infantry Corps on 28th September 1964 and served initially in the Southern Command in 12 Infantry Battalion. He later served in the Eastern Command, in Training Section at Defence Forces Headquarters and as Regional Civil Defence Officer in Limerick. He was among a small band of officers who completed the first ever Army Ranger Course held in 1969.
Overseas Peter served with the United Nations in Cyprus with UNFICYP as a Platoon Commander in 7 Infantry Group (1966-1967), in Lebanon with UNIFL as Force Welfare Officer (1981-1982), in Egypt, Israel and Syria with UNTSO (1995-1996), and in Western Sahara with MINURSO (1999-2000).
A talented sportsman, Peter played Gaelic football with St Laurence’s, Narraghmore, which was then a junior side. He also played for the Kildare Senior Football Team between 1963 and 1970, captaining the side to the 1970 Leinster Final when they lost to Offaly. Peter played for the Tipperary Senior Football Team for four years, as well as with Clonmel Commercials while stationed in Kickham Barracks, Clonmel. He also played rugby with Monkstown Football Club.
Reposing at The George Mullins Funeral Home, Kilcullen Road, Naas (eircode W91 CD0K) on Friday from 5pm to 7pm with Prayers at 6.30pm. Funeral on Saturday morning with Requiem Mass at 10am in The Church of Our Lady and Saint David, Naas and afterwards to Saint Corban’s Cemetery, Dublin Road, Naas.
