ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Peter (Peadar) Hayes, Raheny, Dublin, and formerly of Clarecastle, County Clare. On January 7th, 2023, following a short illness, in the presence of his family in his 102nd year. Beloved husband of the late Mary and Maureen and father of the late Noretta, Tom, and Gerard. Sadly missed by his daughter Mary, his sons John and Kevin, son-in-law John, daughters-in-law Angela, Ursula and Marita, grandchildren Carol, Ross, Alex, Emma, Adam, Sophie, Issie and Joshua, great-grandchildren Michael, Elizabeth and Ronan, nieces, nephews, relatives, Defence Forces colleagues, friends and neighbours.

Peter (Peadar as he was known throughout the Defence Forces) Hayes was born in Clarecastle, County Clare on 4th September 1921. He enlisted in the Defence Forces as a member of 15 Cadet Class on 29th November 1941. Major Patrick Berry, who had been a member of the Military Mission to the United States of America in 1926/1927, was the Cadet Master. On commissioning into the Infantry Corps on 25th May 1943 he was posted to D Company, 22 Infantry Battalion. In January 1946 Peadar was posted to 7 Infantry Battalion as Mortar Officer and was attached to the General Training Depot. In November 1947 he was appointed as Acting Company Commander, B Company, 2 Infantry Battalion and was Staff Officer, Headquarters 2 Brigade for a period. In August 1956 he was attached to North Dublin Staff FCA in addition to being a Company Commander with 5 Infantry Battalion. From October 1959 to August 1963 he was Staff Officer, Plans and Operations Section, Defence Forces Headquarters. He was attached to 7 Infantry Battalion as Acting Admin Officer in 1965. From April to October 1971, Peadar served at HQ UNFICYP in Cyprus. He then served at Headquarters Eastern Command until 1975 when he was posted to the Chief of Staff’s Branch. Peadar retired on 11th April 1980 in the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
Reposing at home on Wednesday evening (January 11th) from 5pm to 7pm. Requiem Mass on Thursday morning (January 12th) at 10am in the Church of Our Lady, Mother of Divine Grace, Raheny followed by Funeral to St. Fintan’s Cemetery, Sutton.
