ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant Kenneth (Ken) Hanley of Bellevue Court, Old Youghal Road, Cork and formerly of Dillon Terrace, Ballina, on the 25th of March, unexpectedly. Much beloved son of the late Peter and Joan Hanley, Ballina, County Mayo, dearest brother to sister Gráinne (Dowling), brothers David, Niall and the late Michael. Deeply regretted by his sister, brothers, brother-in-law [Colonel Brian Dowling (Retd)], sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, relatives, friends and Defence Forces Colleagues, both serving and retired.
Rest In Peace
Ken Hanley was a member of 59 Cadet Class (1882 -1984), was commissioned into the Supply & Transport Corps on 2nd April 1984 and was posted to 1 Field Supply & Transport Company in Collins Barracks, Cork. He had been captain of the Under-20 Team at Ballina Rugby Football Club and excelled in that sport as a cadet. However, he was never able to report to his unit as he was involved in a serious road traffic accident while on post-commissioning leave at home in Ballina. Following many months in Saint Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin, four spent in a coma, he made most of his vital post-coma recovery in Saint Bricin’s Military Hospital under the dedicated care of the military medical staff. He also received treatment at the Dun Laoghaire National Rehabilitation Centre.
Due to the extent of his injuries Ken was discharged on medical grounds from the Defence Forces. When his parents in Ballina died, he moved to Cork to be near the support of his sister Gráinne and her family and lived there independently with the assistance of Headway. He worked in sheltered civilian employment in the Ordnance Clothing Stores in Collins Barracks where he was supported loyally by the staff there.
Ken celebrated his 58th Birthday on 25th February last.
Reposing at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Tuesday evening from 7pm until 8pm. Funeral cortege will arrive to Saint Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina, on Wednesday morning for Mass of the Resurrection at 11.30am, with burial afterwards in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina.
