Maj. Gen. Liam Prendergast RIP

ARCOIreland regrets to inform its members of the death of Major General Liam Prendergast of Walshestown, Newbridge, County Kildare on 10th March, 2019. Peacefully, in his 97th year, in the loving care of the staff at Lourdesville Nursing Home, County Kildare. Loving husband of the late Kay. Sadly missed by his loving children Barbara (Teehan), Patrick, Mary and Denis, sisters Louie, Eileen and Nuala, brother Kevin, daughters-in-law Mary and Geraldine, grandchildren John, Richard, Liam, Christine, Kathryn and Ross, sisters-in-law Tess, Mary and Mary, brother-in-law Michael, nieces, nephews, extended family, relatives and friends.

Liam Prendergast was a native of Clonmel, County Tipperary. A member of 17 Cadet Class he was commissioned in June 1945. He served in the Supply and Transport Corps initially in the Southern Command and later in the Eastern Command and the Curragh Training Camp. He served overseas as Intelligence Officer 38 Infantry Battalion in the Congo in 1962/63 and in Cyprus at the Force Headquarters UNFICYP in 1968/69. Liam was the Chief Instructor Infantry School in 1977 and, on promotion to Colonel, was Director Supply and Transport Corps. On promotion to Brigadier General he was appointed Assistant Chief of Staff from March 1980 to February 1981 and Adjutant General from February 1981 to July 1984 in the rank of Major General.

Liam will repose at his home in Walshestown, Newbridge from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm this Tuesday evening, 12th March, with removal Wednesday morning to Saint Conleth’s Parish Church, Newbridge arriving for 11.00 am Funeral Mass followed by interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Enniscorthy, County Wexford, arriving for 2.30 pm approximately.
