ARCOIreland regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Seán O’Meara of Ruanard, Clonlara, County Clare and formerly of Limerick, and Manorhamilton, County Leitrim. Unexpectedly, on Thursday 27th August 2020, at Cork University Hospital. Beloved husband of Dolores and dearest father of Eoghan. He will be loved and deeply missed by his wife & son, family Paschal & Phelim, sister Marie (O’Briain), daughter-in-law Jill, grandchildren Iarlaith, Setanta & Odhrán, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, Defence Forces colleagues, relatives & friends.

Seán was a member of the 44 Cadet Class (1969-1971) and on commissioning was appointed to 12 Infantry Battalion, Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick. Educated in Gormanston College and a graduate of UCG and UCC, Seán was Officer Commanding Kickham Barracks, Clonmel, Officer Commanding Brigade Training Centre, Collins Barracks, Cork, and Officer Commanding 1 Southern Brigade Reserve Defence Force. He also served in Headquarters 1 Southern Brigade, and in Defence Forces Headquarters as Staff Officer, Ordnance Corps.
Seán’s overseas service included tours of duty in Lebanon with the 44 and 80 Infantry Battalions UNIFIL, in Cambodia with UNAMIC / UNTAC, in Bosnia with SFOR, and with OSCE in Albania. Seán was actively engaged in a range of voluntary work, was an active member ARCOIreland, and Secretary of the Sarsfield Barracks Retired Officers’ Club.
Reposing at home in Ruanard, Clonlara on Friday evening, 28th August, for his immediate family. Requiem Mass in Saint Senan’s Church, Clonlara on Saturday at 12 noon. Seán’s Funeral Mass will be live streamed HERE. Burial afterwards in Doonass Cemetery, Clonlara. Family flowers only. Donations, if desired, to Limerick Youth Services. In compliance with current guidelines, the funeral will be restricted to family members and close friends only.
