Lt Col Nicky Hegarty RIP


ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Nicholas G (Nicky) Hegarty, College Road, Clane, Kildare. On November 8th, 2023, peacefully in the loving care of the staff of Mount Pleasant Lodge Nursing Home, Kilcock. Pre-deceased by his wife Rita and brothers Denis and Charlie. Deeply regretted by his loving wife Nuala, children David, Margaret, Denis, Nora, Aveen and Sarah, sons-in-law Tony, Brian, Liam and Christian, daughters-in-law Patricia and Martina, sister Mary (Ballesty), 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, Defence Forces comrades and many friends.

Nicholas G (Nicky, as he was known throughout the Defence Forces) Hegarty was born in May 1931. His father was Commandant Charles Hegarty who served from 1923 in the Armoured Car Corps and the Cavalry Corps and retired as Executive Officer Depot Cavalry in 1959. Nicky enlisted in the Defence Forces on 25th November 1950 as a Cadet with 25 Cadet Class and was commissioned as an Infantry Officer on 24th November 1952. Nicky initially served in the Eastern Command with 2 Infantry Battalion and 7 Infantry Battalion. As a Commandant he was School Commandant of the Defence Forces School of Physical Culture and as a Lieutenant-Colonel he commanded the General Training Depot in the Curragh Camp.

Reposing at Oliver Reilly’s Funeral Home, Woods House, Clane (W91 YPX4) on Friday from 4pm-8pm. Removal from there on Saturday at approx. 9.30am to arrive at Saint Patrick and Saint Brigid’s Church, Clane, for 10am funeral Mass, followed by burial in Mainham Cemetery, Clane.
