Lt Col AJ Mullowney RIP

RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Adrian (AJ) Mullowney, French Furze Grove, Kildare Town, and formerly of Naas, County Kildare. Peacefully, on 2nd October 2026, at home. Predeceased by his beloved wife Phyllis and son Brian. AJ will be sadly missed by his loving daughter Denise, son Owen, son-in-law Shane, daughter-in-law Mary Elizabeth, grandchildren Max and Conor, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours, Defence Forces comrades and friends.

Adrian (AJ) Mullowney was born on 15th July 1943 and enlisted in Óglaigh na hÉireann as a member of 36 Cadet Class on 12th December 1961. Commissioned into the Infantry Corps on his 20th birthday on 15th July 1963 he was posted to the Curragh Training Camp.

His home service included appointments in the General Training Depot, Depot Signals, 3 Infantry Battalion, Military Detention Barracks, Depot Military Police Corps, and Headquarters Curragh Command. Among the many appointments AJ held was Assistant Provost Marshal in the Curragh.

He served in Cyprus with UNFICYP as a Lieutenant Platoon Commander with A Company 7 Infantry Group from October 1966 to March 1967.  He returned to Cyprus where, as a Captain, he was Quartermaster, 20 Infantry Group, from April to November 1971.

AJ had a keen interest in history, particularly local history and was a great supporter of Naas Local History Group. He was also an enthusiastic player of Bridge as a member of Cill Dara Tuesday Bridge Club. AJ was predeceased by his older brother, the late Colonel Fintan Mullowney, a member of 26 Cadet Class.

Reposing at McWey’s Funeral Home, Abbeyview, Kildare Town on Monday (5th October) from 5.30pm concluding with prayers at 7.30pm. Removal by Glennon’s Funeral Directors from his family home on Tuesday morning to arrive at Saint Brigid’s Church, The Curragh for Requiem Mass at 11am. Burial afterwards in Saint Conleth’s Cemetery, Kildare Town.
