RIP

The following are the funeral details for Lieutenant-Commander Martin Clifford, whose passing we have just received word of.

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant-Commander Martin Clifford of Carrigaline, County Cork, and formerly of Dalkey, County Dublin. On April 23rd, 2024, peacefully in the presence of his loving family and in the tender care of the Staff of Marymount. Beloved husband of the late Marie (nee Reilly), loving father of Paul, Colette, Brenda, Mark, and Ken. Sadly missed by his loving family, grandchildren Haley, Darcy, Finn, Joshua, Róisín, Ben, Eoin, Jack, Jessica, Saoirse, Niamh, Bláithín, Conor, and Luka, sisters Kathleena, and Breda, brother Patrick, daughters-in-law Vera, Paula, and Laura, son-in-law Ross, extended family, Defence Forces comrades, and friends.

Martin Clifford, a native of Dalkey, County Dublin, was born on 30th September 1942. He enlisted in the Naval Service on 25th February 1958 as an Ordinary Seaman. Having served in various Naval Service appointments for over twenty years he was chosen to undergo 2 Potential Officers Course and was commissioned on 7th December 1970. Martin was assigned to the Naval Service where he served in a wide variety of administrative appointments. Having obtained a catering management qualification, and having held Naval Service appointments in this field, Martin retired from the Defence Forces in the rank of Lieutenant-Commander to take up an appointment with Campbell Catering Offshore.    

A talented soccer player, coach, and administrator Martin played with Cobh Celtic and Tramore Athletic. He will be remembered in particular for his contribution to Carrigaline Celtic, where he was instrumental in fostering underage soccer and where he served as club chairman.

Martin’s funeral took place on Saturday 27th April at 3.00pm in the Church of Our Lady and Saint John, Carrigaline with burial afterwards in Saint John’s Cemetery, Ballinrea. Donations in lieu of flowers to Marymount Hospice: www.marymount.ie
