ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Commandant Liam Gavin of Athenry, County Galway, and formerly of Dalton Place, Salthill, Galway. After a short illness, peacefully on Saturday 28th August 2021, in the presence of his loving family. Beloved husband of Marie and father of Síofra, Shane, Ronan, and Liam. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, daughter and sons, his brother Seamus, grandchildren Deane, Siún, Ella, Second Lieutenant Conor Murphy (96 Cadet Class), Abbie and Kian, his son-in-law Lieutenant Colonel Seán Murphy (63 Cadet Class), daughters-in-law Anita, Tracy and Rachel, sister-in-law Mary, nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends.

Liam Gavin joined the Defence Forces as a member of 34 Cadet Class (1960-1961). He was commissioned on 11 December 1961, appointed to the Artillery Corps, and posted to 4 Field Artillery Regiment, Mullingar. Liam served for most of his career with 5 Field Artillery Regiment FCA.
Overseas Liam served as Assistant Operations Officer with 5 Infantry Group with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) from October 1965 to March 1966. He served as a military observer with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East. He was Company Commander C Company 49 Infantry Battalion with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) from April to November 1981.
Liam retired from the Defence Forces in 1984 and completed his annual 1st Line Reserve training with 5 Field Artillery Regiment.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Stroke Unit, NUH Galway, for their care and compassion during Liam’s illness.
Requiem Mass will be celebrated for Liam on Tuesday, 31 August at 11 a.m. at the Church of Christ the King, Salthill. The current attendance limit at the Church is 50 mourners and funeral arrangements will comply with this guideline. Private cremation will follow. Family flowers only please.
