John Young, who was born on 17th September 1934, was a member of a family with a proud military tradition. He was the son of Commandant Peter J Young, who fought with 1 Cork Brigade during the War of Independence, served in the National Army during the Civil War, and in the Permanent Defence Force. John’s brother, Commandant Peter Young, 43 Cadet Class, was instrumental in creating one of Ireland’s great archival collections in Military Archives. His son Colin served as a Company Quartermaster Sergeant in the office of the Director of Supply and Transport.
John enlisted in Óglaigh na hÉireann as a member of 11 Field Company, Supply and Transport Corps, An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil in 1952. After commissioning in 1958 he continued to serve with this very active unit. John was a committee member of the Supply and Transport Officers’ Club for many years helping to organise the club’s popular social events. He worked in the tyre supply business and, after serving on full time duty during the 1970s and 1980s, was commissioned into the Permanent Defence Force on 27th June 1989, where he served in Clancy Barracks and in the office of the Director of Supply and Transport. John retired from the Defence Forces in 1994.
