ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Commandant Joseph (Joe) Campbell late of Bray, County Wicklow and formerly of Leopardstown, County Dublin and Athlone, County Westmeath, peacefully on 12th February 2023, at Saint Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin. Beloved husband of Lindsay, loving father of daughters Heather and Lindsay, sons Colin, Graehame, Adam and Gordon, brother of Patricia and Padraig; Joe will be sadly missed by his wife, children, and their mother Desna; stepchildren Candice, Kirsten and Rowena, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, brother, sister, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, Defence Forces colleagues, neighbours and a wide circle of friends. Predeceased by his sisters Anne and Mary.
Joe Campbell, a native of Athlone, was born on 9th December 1944 and enlisted in the Defence Forces as a member of 38 Cadet Class on 7th October 1963. He was commissioned into the Infantry Corps on 27th September 1965 and was posted to 2 Infantry Battalion in Cathal Brugha Barracks. He later served as a Training Officer with 7 Infantry Battalion FCA and as a Staff Officer in the Quartermaster General’s Branch. He was an Aide de Camp to An tUachtarán, Dr Patrick Hillery. Joe served overseas in Cyprus with UNFICYP, in the Middle East with UNTSO, and in Lebanon with UNIFIL. After retiring from the Defence Forces, he was Assistant Civil Defence Officer with Dublin City Council. Joe had a passionate interest in rugby and was a long-time member of Lansdowne FC.
Reposing at his home on Wednesday (15th February) from 5.00pm to 8.00pm. Removal from his home on Thursday (16th February) at 1.30 pm for the short journey to Colliers Funeral Home, Old Connaught Avenue, Bray, County Wicklow for a Funeral Service at 2.00pm, followed by private cremation.
