ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Captain Noel Shannon of Montenotte, Cork City and late of Ranelagh, Dublin. On February 14th, 2022, peacefully, in the tender care of the staff at Marymount Hospice and in the presence of his loving family. Dearly loved husband of Angie, loving father of Eoin, Sadhbh and Orlaith and dear brother of Margaret, Bernadette, Eoin and Imelda. Sadly missed by his loving wife and family, grandchildren Myah, Paige and Hailey, nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law Patsy, relatives and a large circle of friends and Defence Forces colleagues.

Noel James Shannon was born on 17th December 1958 in Ranelagh, Dublin City. He enlisted in the Defence Forces as a member of 54 Cadet Class in November 1977, was commissioned into the Infantry Corps in September 1979 and was posted to 4 Infantry Battalion, a unit he had a long association with. Among the units that Noel also served with were Area Records Staff, Southern Command, and with 13 Infantry Battalion FCA. Overseas Noel served on two occasions with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL): in 1984 as a Lieutenant with B Company 55 Infantry Battalion and in 1996 as a Captain in Battalion Headquarters 79 Infantry Battalion. He retired in May 1999 and went to work with the National Training and Development Institute, Hollyhill. Noel was a noted sportsman and coach. He played football with the 4 Battalion and Southern Command teams. He was also a prominent boxer at All Army level and later a successful boxing coach. Noel was Secretary of Brian Dillons GAA Club in Cork City for many years where he successfully coordinated the underage section.
