Canon Michael Murphy RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Very Reverend Canon Michael Murphy, a former Chaplain to the Defence Forces, on March 11th 2023, unexpectedly at his beloved Fountainstown, County Cork. Son of the late Jim and Jo and brother of Niall and the late Father Joseph. Sadly missed by his loving brother, sister-in-law Maura, nieces Catherine, Christine and Lynda, nephews James and Michael, nephews-in-law Rob and Peter, grandnieces Isabel and Chloe, grandnephews Conor and Liam, Bishop Fintan Gavin, Bishop John Buckley, his fellow Clergy and the Parishioners of Ballyphehane and his former Parishes, relatives, friends, especially Sr. Monica and Colette, and his colleagues from the Defence Forces.

Canon Michael Murphy was a native of Blackpool in Cork City and was ordained a priest of the diocese in Saint Mary and Saint Anne’s Cathedral, Cork, in June 1968. Canon Michael began his priestly ministry on temporary mission in the Archdiocese of Southwark, England. On his return to Cork and Ross in 1969, he moved to Gurranabraher Parish as curate. In 1975, he joined the Cork and Ross South American Mission until 1981 and afterwards served as curate in Carrigaline Parish.

Canon Michael was then appointed as a Chaplain to the Forces in Collins’ Barracks, Cork where he was a much loved and respected priest. Overseas he served in missions in Lebanon, Kosovo, Somalia and Honduras before being appointed Parish Priest of Ballyphehane Parish. He ministered in Ballinlough as Assistant Priest since September 2022 after retiring as Parish Priest of Ballyphehane.

Canon Michael will repose at Sullivan’s Funeral Home, Turners Cross on Tuesday (14th) from 4.00pm until 6.00pm. Celebration of Vespers will take place at the Church of the Assumption, Ballyphehane on Tuesday (14th) at 7.30pm. Requiem Mass on Wednesday (15th) at 2.30pm which may be viewed on www.churchmedia.tv/ballyphehane funeral afterwards at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery, Tory Top Road.
