RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Brigadier-General Maurice Downing of Terenure, Dublin and formerly of Glengarriff, County Cork on 22nd November 2020, peacefully, at the Mater Private Hospital. Beloved husband of the late Maeve. He will be sadly missed by his children Margaret, Maeve, John, Maurice, Paul and Finbarr, grandchildren John, Rachel, Alexander, Danielle, Paul, Kate, Hannah, Jenny, Ronan, Chloe, Leah, Josh, Jamie, Daniel and Abbey, sisters Breda and Maureen, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, neighbours, Defence Forces colleagues and especially his friends in Terenure College Rugby Football Club.

Maurice Downing was born on 16th May 1931 and enlisted in the Defence Forces as a member of 24 Cadet Class. He was commissioned on 10 December 1951. Among the appointments he held were Officer Commanding 2 Infantry Battalion, Director Planning & Research Section and Commandant of the Military College. He served with the United Nations Force in Cyprus from September 1968 to March 1969 at Group Headquarters 11 Infantry Group as Operations Officer. Maurice retired from the Defence Forces as Assistant Chief of Staff in 1992 with the rank of Brigadier General.
