ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Captain Martin Reidy, Hodson Bay, Kiltoom, Athlone, County Roscommon and formerly The Windmill, Cloughjordan, County Tipperary on Thursday, June 6th, 2024, peacefully, under the loving care of the staff at Roscommon Hospice. Predeceased by his parents John and Mary and niece Ellen Moylett. Martin will be sadly missed by Anne, John and Órlaith, John’s fiancée Tay, Órlaith’s husband Darragh, brother Seán, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, Defence Forces comrades, fellow Deacons, his many friends and neighbours.

Martin Reidy was born on 25th August 1960. He was educated at the Cistercian College in Roscrea and enlisted in the Defence Forces as a member of 55 Cadet Class on 31st October 1978 – the day that Munster beat the All Blacks. Martin was a proud Munster, Tipperary and Cloughjordan man.
Commissioned into the Infantry Corps on 2nd May 1980 he was posted as a Platoon Commander with 28 Infantry Battalion, where he served the early years of his career. During his time with the unit Martin played hurling for the Donegal Senior Team and attended University College Galway where he graduated with a Batchelor of Commerce degree in 1983, and returned there later to complete a Batchelor of Laws. Thereafter, he served mainly with 6 Infantry Battalion in Athlone, briefly with 2 Infantry Battalion, Eastern Command, and then in Western Command Headquarters. Overseas Martin served with C Company, 57 Infantry Battalion, UNIFIL from May to October 1985.
Martin retired from the Defence Forces in 1996, qualified as a solicitor in 1999, and worked in that profession in the Athlone/Longford region until he retired in June 2023. Latterly, Martin undertook theological studies in Saint Patrick’s Pontifical University, Maynooth, leading to his ordination as a Deacon in the Diocese of Elphin on 17th December 2017. He then undertook a Master’s Degree in Canon Law at Saint Paul University in Canada and thereafter acted as a diocesan advisor until his untimely death.
Martin’s remains will arrive at the Church of the Risen Christ, Ballybay, Kiltoom (N37 NY36) on Sunday evening, (June 9th) at 4.45 pm for Evening Prayer of the Church followed by reposing until 7 pm. Mass of the Resurrection on Monday morning (June 10th) at 11 am with burial afterwards in Kiltoom Cemetery.
