ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant Commander Aedh McGinn, Leckaneen, Aghabullogue and formerly of Kerry Pike, Cork. On March 9th 2024, Aedh passed away peacefully after a short illness bravely borne at Cork University Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband & best friend of Marjorie (Twomey) and adored father of Donncha, Fergal and the late Patrick. Dearly beloved son of Phil and Eimer, very deeply regretted by his brother Paudie, sisters Orla and Tint, parents-in-law Michael and Margaret, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and their families, relatives, neighbours, Defence Forces comrades, and a large circle of friends.

Aedh McGinn was a native of Kerry Pike, County Cork and completed his secondary school education in Saint Finbarr’s College, Farranferris, in Cork City. He enlisted in the Defence Forces as a Naval Service Cadet in 1992 and was commissioned in September 1994 as an Operations Branch officer. He completed the International Sub-Lieutenants Course in the UK School of Maritime Operations and gained his Naval Watchkeeping Certificate in 1996. Aedh served in a wide variety of appointments both ashore and afloat including periods in the Naval College and in Naval Service Headquarters. Overseas Aedh completed a tour of duty with 91 Infantry Battalion UNMIL in 2004. Promoted to Lieutenant Commander in February 2004 he served as Executive Officer LE Eithne and later took command of LE Aoife 2006-2008. Having completed a master’s degree in Supply Chain Management, he served for a period in the Naval Logistics Unit. As Operations Officer in Fleet Operations he was involved in several high-profile narcotics interdiction operations, notably Operation Unity, the interdiction of the yacht Makayabella. His final posting was as Officer Commanding LE Emer. Aedh retired from the Naval Service in late 2014 and filled senior positions in the manufacturing industry in Cork.
