Survey: Impact of Overseas Service on Early Retirement

Comdt Jamie Troy is a student on the 03 Joint Command and Staff Course and is undergoing an MA in Leadership with Maynooth University. The subject of his MA thesis is to: Review the impact of overseas service on the retention of officers in the Irish Defence Forces.

Previous theses on this subject focussed on the views of serving officers, which could be seen as hypothetical in nature. Jamie’s research for his thesis involves direct engagement with retired officers, and their spouses / partners, to ascertain definitively if overseas service was a factor in their decision to leave the Defence Forces.

If it can be shown that overseas service played a role in officers choosing to leave, it would be beneficial to understand the role and extent this influenced their decision. It would seem that multiple factors associated with foreign service have been identified by western armed forces, which either individually or collectively were causes for personnel leaving military service.

By considering the factors deriving from his research, Jamie hopes that his thesis will contribute to enhancing the Defence Forces retention policy.
