Brig-Gen Tom McDunphy RIP

ARCOIreland regrets to inform its members of the death of Brigadier-General T.M. (Tom) McDunphy, peacefully on Saturday, 04 April, at Rosehill Nursing Home Surrey, England, while visiting his daughter. 

Husband of the late Josephine (Jo). Deeply regretted by his son Padraic, daughter Maeve, brother Terry, daughter-in-law Trina, son-in-law Chris, and grandchildren Ellen, Andrew and Alex, former comrades in the Defence Forces, and friends.

Having received a Temporary Commission during the Emergency, Tom was awarded a Cadetship in 1944 and graduated as a member of 18 Cadet Class in 1946. He was appointed to the Artillery Corps and posted to the 4 Field Artillery Regiment, Columb Barracks, Mullingar.

Tom held numerous command and staff appointments within the Artillery Corps, including Regimental Commander 6 Field Artillery Regiment (FCA), and OC Depot and School, Magee Barracks, Kildare.  Tom also served in HQ Western Command and in Defence Forces Headquarters.

He was appointed Director of Artillery in 1978 and in 1982 was promoted to the rank of Brigadier-General and appointed General Officer Commanding Curragh Command.  He retired in July 1983.

Tom served overseas with the United Nations in the Congo with the 38 Infantry Battalion (1962 – 1963) and with HQ UNFICYP in Cyprus (1969). Due to the prevailing environment, a Memorial Mass will take place at a later date in Dublin.
