ARCOIreland regrets to inform its members of the death of Brigadier General Stephen (Steve) Murphy of Mount Merrion, County Dublin and formerly of Tulla, County Clare. On 26th January 2020, peacefully after a short illness. Predeceased by his wife, Joan (Cahill) and son, Patrick. Deeply regretted by his daughters, Eileen, Siobhan, and Orla, son, Declan, sons-in-law, Frank, David and Frank, daughters-in-law, Barbara and Tracey, and his eleven grandchildren. Brother of Mary (Whyms) and Biddy (Culloo) and the late Paddy and Teddy.
Steve was a member of 22 Cadet Class (1949-51) and served as a young officer in An Céad Cath and the Western Command and subsequently in Defence Forces Headquarters where he held senior appointments including Director of Operations and finally Assistant Chief of Staff. Among the overseas appointments he held was Officer Commanding 48 Battalion UNIFIL.
Removal, Tuesday, to Church of Saint Peter and Paul, Tulla to arrive at 7.00pm. Funeral Mass at 11.30am Wednesday followed by cremation at Shannon Crematorium. Family flowers only. Donations, if desired, to the Peter McVerry Trust.
