RIP

The following are the funeral details, together with links to rip.ie, of four retired officers who died over the last year. Regretfully, ARCO only received word of their passing recently.

Captain Kevin Daly RIP

Captain Kevin Daly of Sandycove, London, and Cyprus, died on 30th April 2024 in his 94th year. Kevin was husband of the late Máirín Redmond and the late Patricia Doyle. Loving father to Aisling, Joe, Mark, Jonathan, and Hugh. Sadly missed by his children and extended family and friends at home and abroad. Kevin was a member of 25 Cadet Class 1950-1952.

Lieutenant-Commander John A. (Tony) Ryan RIP

Lieutenant-Commander John A. (Tony) Ryan of Rochestown, Cork, died on December 3rd, 2024, peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork. Tony was the beloved husband of Eileen (Lynch) and the late Maureen (née Fitzgerald), loving father of Colette, Raymond, Carolyn, Audrey, Paul and Leslie and brother of the late Con. Sadly missed by his loving family, sons-in-law Brendan and Brendan, daughters-in-law Elizabeth and Vida, Leslie’s partner Sam, grandchildren Eoghan, Ruth, Tom, Ian, Robert, Kiya, Anita, Anthony, Cian, Cillian, Ciara, Ben and Alma, the Lynch family, relatives and his many friends. Tony served as Senior Electrical Engineer in the Naval Service and was a member of Curragh Sub Aqua Club.

Captain Michael Joseph McDonough RIP

Captain Michael Joseph McDonough died on 18th February 2025.  Beloved husband of Gretta, sadly missed by his loving family, children Stephen, Martin, Alan, Michael, and Clare, daughters-in-law Adrienne, Elaine and Alison and partner Andrew, grandchildren Leah, Cathy, Tom, Daniel, Rebecca, James, Louis, Sophie, Lucy, Ruben, Leon and Freya, brother Don, sisters Mairead, Patricia, and the late Maire, nieces, nephews, and his extended family in Dublin, Dundalk, Galway, Clare and New York. Michael was a field events coach with the Irish Team at the Rome Olympics in 1960 where one of his athletes, John Lawlor, (Civil Service Harriers) finished 4th in the hammer event. He retired from the Defence Forces in 1965 to became the first Inspector of Physical Education appointed by the Minister for Education. Michael played a leading role in setting up the Physical Education College (Thomond College) in Limerick in 1973. He was a member of 22 Cadet Class 1949-1951.

Captain Kieran Whelan RIP

Captain Kieran (Red) Whelan died on 2nd March 2025.  Kieran was predeceased by his loving wife Betty and daughter Denise. Very sadly missed by his adored daughters Anne, Catherine, Mary, Terri, Ciara, and Paula, sons-in-law, loving grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as his extended family. Kieran retired from the Defence Forces to take up the appointment of Bursar at Castleknock College. He was a member of 25 Cadet Class 1950-1952.
