ARCOIreland regrets to inform its members of the death of Major General John J. (J. J.) Barry of Baily, Howth, County Dublin on May 24, 2020 in his 96th year. Beloved husband of the late Kitty and much loved father of Michael, Paul, Anne, Joey and Virginia; lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.

J. J. Barry, who was born on 25 February 1925, was a native of Cahersiveen, County Kerry and a member of 19 Cadet Class (1945-47). He was commissioned into the Supply and Transport Corps and served mainly in the Eastern Command where he had a long association with Clancy Barracks, particularly as Officer Commanding Base Workshops. Overseas he served as a Captain in Logistics Branch at UNFICYP HQ in 1967. He served in the Quartermaster General’s Branch and on promotion to Colonel was Senior ADC to An tUachtarán, Officer Commanding Eastern Command Infantry Force and, Director Supply and Transport Corps. He was promoted to Brigadier General in April 1984 and was appointed Assistant Chief of Staff. On promotion to the rank of Major General, J. J. Barry was appointed Quartermaster General in which appointment he served from April 1984 to December 1985.
