Lt. Col. Noel Walsh RIP

ARCOIreland regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Noel Walsh of The Square, Miltown Malbay, County Clare and North Circular Road, Limerick. On 29th April 2020, peacefully, at Ennis General Hospital. Beloved husband of Ursula and greatly loved father of Carl, Lisa and Noelle; grandfather of Lauren, Lucy and Matthew. He will be sadly missed by his family, daughter in law Brenda, brothers in law Donogh and Roddy O’Loghlin, relatives, Defence Forces colleagues, neighbours and many friends.

Noel Walsh was a member of 28 Cadet Class (1953 – 1955) and served mainly in the Western and Southern Commands in a variety of appointments.  He won a senior championship with his beloved Miltown St. Josephs in 1959. A keen golfer in his youth, he won a President’s Prize at Lahinch in the 1960s and qualified for the South of Ireland championship on several occasions.

He will be remembered particularly as a national GAA administrator and had the distinction of being Chairman of the Munster Council from 1995 until 1998. He held the post when Clare ended a 63 year wait by winning the Munster senior hurling title in 1995 giving him the honour of presenting the trophy to captain Anthony Daly.

Noel worked tirelessly for the opening of GAA grounds to other sports, an ambition that came to pass in 2005 with the decision to allow rugby and soccer to be played in Croke Park. He sought the presidency of the GAA in 1999 and 2002 and was elected a trustee of the GAA in 2000.

May he Rest in Peace
