RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Michael (Mick – ‘Spike’) Nolan of Montenotte, Cork City and formerly of Newbridge, County Kildare. On June 26th, 2022, peacefully, in the tender loving care of the staff at the Mercy University Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Dearly beloved husband of Ann and loving father of Aideen, Claire, Brian, Peter and the late baby Michael, and dear brother of Mary.

Sadly missed by his loving wife and family, sons-in-law Javier and Stephen, his cherished grandchildren Claudia, Lucy, Martha, Jack and Emily, brother-in-law Eamon and sister-in-law Eileen, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours, Defence Forces colleagues and friends.

Mick Nolan, known as ‘Spike’ throughout the Defence Forces, was a member of 36 Cadet Class (1961-1963). He was born and raised in Newbridge, where his father was a schoolteacher in Newbridge College. Mick was a member of the famous Guard of Honour provided by the 36 Cadet Class at Arbour Hill for President John F Kennedy during his state visit to Ireland in 1963. Commissioned into the Infantry Corps on 15th July 1963 he was posted to 12 Infantry Battalion in Limerick. He later served with 14 Infantry Battalion FCA, in Southern Command Headquarters as both Adjutant and Quartermaster, with the Civil Defence, and, for a short period, as Acting Officer Commanding 4 Infantry Battalion. Overseas Mick served with UNFICYP in Cyprus, UNTSO in the Middle East and with UNIFIL in Lebanon. In retirement he developed a keen interest in antiques and was a very skilled gardener, whose advice was often sought.

Reposing in the Mayfield Funeral Home, Old Youghal Road, of Jerh O’Connor Limited on Tuesday (June 28th) from 5.00pm to 6.00pm. Requiem Mass at 10.00am on Wednesday (June 29th) in Saint Patrick’s Church, Lower Glanmire Road. Funeral afterwards to the Island Crematorium, Ringaskiddy, County Cork.
