International election observation plays an important role in the promotion of democratisation, human rights, and the rule of law. The Department of Foreign Affairs maintains a roster of observers who are available to participate in election observation missions. The Department nominate observers to missions organised, in the main, by the EU and the OSCE.
Ireland’s current International Election Observation Roster was established on 1st January 2019 and is due to expire on 31st December 2023. Expressions of interest are now being sought from those who are interested in applying to be a member of Ireland’s next International Election Observation Roster. This new roster will run for five years from the date of its establishment.
