ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Commandant Martin Flanagan, Montree, Athlone. Peacefully, on Saturday 28th December 2024, in the company of his loving family, in the Galway Clinic, supported by the wonderful staff that cared for him during his time there. Predeceased by his infant daughter Tina and his brother Colm. Martin will be forever missed by his wife Colette, daughter Gabrielle and adored grandchildren Patrick and Ellen, son-in-law David, brother Eamon (Dublin), sister Mary (Dublin), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, Defence Forces comrades, Camino Society Ireland, neighbours and many friends.

Martin Flanagan was born in 1950 in Donnycarney, Dublin. He enlisted in the Defence Forces on 15 October 1968 as a member of 43 Cadet Class. Commissioned into the Infantry Corps on 28 September 1970, Martin was posted to the Western Command. Among the appointments he held in the West was as a Company Commander in both 6 and 28 Infantry Battalions. He also served in a number of staff appointments at Headquarters, 4 Western Brigade.
Overseas, in Lebanon, Martin was Company Commander, Headquarters Company, 61 Infantry Battalion, UNIFIL from April to November 1987 and Welfare Officer 77 Infantry Battalion, UNIFIL from April to October 1995. He also served as an Observer with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation in the Middle East.
Martin retired from the Defence Forces in 2000 to pursue a career in business.
Reposing at The Strand Funeral Home (N37 E6K0) on Monday from 4 o’clock to 6 o’clock. Mass of the Resurrection on Tuesday at 12 o’clock in Saint Mary’s Church followed by Burial afterward in Coosan cemetery.
