Comdt. Liam Donnelly RIP

RIP

ARCOIreland regrets to inform its members of the death of Commandant W. G. (Liam) Donnelly, late of Foxrock, County Dublin and formerly of Tuam, County Galway, on January 5th 2017, peacefully at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He will be very sadly missed by his beloved wife Eileen, children Aidan, Joan and Barbara, daughter-in-law Marie-Louise, sons-in-law Peter and Peter, his 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, sister, brother, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Liam was a member of the 22nd Cadet Class. Commissioned in 1951 he served in the Western Command during his early career, later moving to Dublin where he served as Officer Commanding, Command Training Depot (East) and was 2 i/c of the 27th Infantry Battalion during its formative year. He served in Defence Forces Headquarters as Personal Staff Officer to the Chief of Staff. Liam was Support Platoon Commander with A Company, 35th Battalion, during the Siege of Jadotville in the Congo in September 1961. On September 17th 2016 he was in Athlone when the Minister with responsibility for Defence presented A Company with a Unit Citation.

Reposing at Rom Massey & Sons Funeral Home, Cranford Centre, Stillorgan Road (opposite Belfield Flyover – phone 01 283 7006) on Saturday 7th January from 2pm until 3.30pm prior to removal to the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Foxrock arriving at 4.30pm. Funeral Mass on Monday at 12 noon followed by burial at Dean’s Grange Cemetery. Family flowers only, please.
