Gus McMenamin, having been a science teacher, joined the Ordnance Corps in the early 1970s. He was part of a group of six direct entrants – Des Donagh, Denis Ward, Barry Sullivan, Tim Donovan and Paddy Boyle, who spent a year training at the Ordnance School, Clancy Barracks, Dublin. Gus served with 4 Garrison Ordnance Company in Athlone and 3 Garrrison Ordnance Company in Cork. This was a time of serious conflict in Northern Ireland, spilling over into the Republic and officers of the Ordnance Corps were heavily involved in Explosive Ordnance Disposal, particularly along the Border. Later on he was posted to 2 Garrison Ordnance Company, Cathal Brugha Barracks, Dublin, and settled in the town of Rush, where he became a member of the local Golf Club and formed an Astronomy Group. Gus served overseas in Lebanon and in West Africa. A man of quiet disposition, but with strong soldierly qualities.
