ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Colonel Seán Quilty, Óglaigh na hÉireann, of Retreat Park, Athlone, County Westmeath and formerly of Croom, County Limerick. Peacefully on Sunday 3rd March 2024. Predeceased by his beloved parents John Joe and Myra, his sister Mary, and brothers Patrick and Gerard. Sadly missed by his loving wife Connie, daughter Deirdre, sons John, Michael, Conor, Brian and Francis, brothers Donie, Bobby, Patsy, Tom and Martin, sisters Shelagh and Carmel, grandchildren David, Luke, Jack, Gavin, Anna, Trudy, Sarah, Faye, Ciara and Dara, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, Defence Forces comrades and many friends.

Seán Quilty was born on 31st July 1939 in Croom, County Limerick. He enlisted in the Defence Forces on 23rd January 1958 as a member of 32 Cadet Class. Commissioned on 18th January 1960 as an Infantry Corps officer, he was posted to 6 Infantry Battalion, in Athlone. This was the beginning of a long association with the unit, during which Seán would hold many appointments, culminating as Officer Commanding. Seán also served with 16 Infantry Battalion, An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil and with the Military Police unit in Athlone in the Western Command. He was Officer Commanding, Eastern Command Infantry Force in Gormanston, County Meath, and finally Executive Officer and Second-in-Command, Western Command as a Colonel.
Overseas Seán served with ONUC in the Congo as a Platoon Commander with C Company, 37 Infantry Battalion, with the United Nations India-Pakistan Observation Mission UNIPOM, and twice with the United Nations Good Offices Mission in Afghanistan and Pakistan UNGOMAP.
A keen sportsman (he was the uncle of the Rugby Legend, Paul O’Connell) Seán excelled at Hurling, Gaelic Football and Rugby.
Reposing at Flynn’s Funeral Home, The Strand (N37 WY17) on Wednesday (6th March) from 5pm until 8pm. Requiem Mass on Thursday (7th March) at 11am in Saint Anthony’s Franciscan Church (https://www.mcn.live/Camera/franciscan-friary-athlone) followed by burial afterwards in Coosan Cemetery.
