Capt Tony Fogarty RIP

RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Captain Anthony (Tony) Fogarty, Bracken Grove, County Waterford, and formerly of Landscape Park, Churchtown, Dublin 14. On 7th October 2025, peacefully, surrounded by his family in the care of the wonderful staff of Waterford University Hospital, following the care received by Kilbarry Care Centre.

Beloved husband of Paula, loving and much-loved father of Vivian, Tony, Gary, Valerie, Damian, Alan, David, Michael and Siobhan. Tony will be forever loved and dearly missed by his wife, sons, daughters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, his adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Niall, nieces, nephews, extended family, relatives, Defence Forces comrades and friends.

Anthony (Tony) Fogarty was born in Cork on 4th October 1938. He enlisted in Óglaigh na hÉireann on 21st February 1955 and was initially posted to 4 Infantry Battalion in Collins Barracks, Cork. Tony subsequently transferred to the Signals Corps and was posted to 1 Field Signals Company where he rose to the rank of Company Sergeant. He was a member of 2 Potential Officers Course and was commissioned on 7th December 1970. Among the units Tony served with were 2 Garrison Ordnance Company, Clancy Barracks Company, Headquarters Eastern Command, 2 Hospital Company, Command Training Depot (East), and 2 Infantry Battalion.

Tony had extensive overseas service. He served three tours of duty with ONUC in the Congo: 32 Infantry Battalion in 1960 (The first overseas unit deployment by the Defence Forces), 1 Infantry Group in 1961, and 38 Infantry Battalion in 1962-1963. He served twice with UNFICYP in Cyprus: in 1964 with 40 Infantry Battalion and in 1968 with 10 Infantry Group. In April 1974 Tony deployed to the Sinai with 26 Infantry Group UNEF II. However, the unit was withdrawn shortly afterwards by the government in the wake of the Dublin and Monaghan Bombings. Tony’s final overseas deployment was with 46 Infantry Battalion UNIFIL, Lebanon, in 1979-1980 as Welfare Officer.

Tony retired from the Permanent Defence Force in 1982 to take up a position in the security industry and served with the Reserve of Offices (First Line) until 4th October 1992. A keen and talented all-round sportsman, Tony excelled as a Sub Aqua Diver, having been introduced to diving while serving in Cyprus.

Removal to the Church of the Annunciation, Rathfarnham on Saturday morning, 11th October arriving for 11am Requiem Mass followed by cremation service in the Victorian Chapel, Mount Jerome.
