Capt Mick Mulcahy RIP

RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Captain Michael Mulcahy, Blackrock, County Dublin and formerly Listowel, County Kerry. On Thursday, 26th February 2026, peacefully, at Newtownpark Nursing Home. Dear husband to Agnes and loving father to Conor and Ronan. Sadly missed by his brother Joe, sister-in-law Shelagh, daughter-in-law Fiona, nieces Fiona and Clare. Very sadly missed by his grandchildren Séamus, Aoife, Fia, and Arthur, extended family, neighbours, Defence Forces comrades and good friends.

Michael P (Mick) Mulcahy was born on 24th July 1930, and grew up in Listowel, County Kerry where his father was the Garda Superintendent. He was a schoolmate and close friend of John B Keane, the playwright and novelist. Mick enlisted in the Defence Forces as a member of 22 Cadet Class in 1949 and was commissioned on 14th December 1950. He served in Depot Cavalry, 4 Motor Squadron and 1 Armoured Car Squadron. Mick completed a motor engineering course at Bolton Street College in 1953 and served as Technical Officer in Cavalry Workshops and as an instructor in the Cavalry School. He retired from Óglaigh na hÉireann in 1958, and worked initially with An Comhairle Oiliúna (The Industrial Training Authority), and then with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Jordan and Afghanistan. 

Mick remained on the strength of the First Line Reserve with 1 Armoured Car Squadron until his retirement in July 1984.

 Reposing in Massey Brothers’ Funeral Home, Blackrock, A94 X308 on Tuesday 3rd March from 5pm to 7pm. House private. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Assumption, Booterstown, A94 NW53 on Wednesday 4th March at 11am (https://www.churchservices.tv/booterstown), followed by a cremation service at the Victorian Chapel, Mount Jerome Crematorium, Harold’s Cross, D6W HY98.
