The family moved to Park Drive, Ranelagh, in Dublin when his father was transferred to Portobello (now Cathal Brugha) Barracks in Rathmines. Des enlisted in the Defence Forces as a member of 25 Cadet Class in 1950 and was commissioned on 24th November 1952. He served for most of his career in the Equitation School where, with his brother Billy, he was a member of the 1957 Aga Khan Trophy team, among many other competitions.
