ARCO is pleased to highlight the fact that serving officers of the Reserve of Officers (First Line), commonly known as the First Line Reserve, once again form part of the Association’s membership. This development reflects the enduring connection between retired Permanent Defence Force (PDF) officers and their continuing contribution to national defence through reserve service.
The First Line Reserve is a unique component of the Reserve Defence Forces, open only to officers who have previously held a commission and served in the PDF. As such, it provides an important mechanism through which experienced former PDF officers can continue to make their professional knowledge, leadership, and expertise available to the Defence Forces when required.
Membership of ARCO and service in the First Line Reserve are entirely complementary. A retired PDF officer may simultaneously be a member of ARCO while also serving as a commissioned officer in the First Line Reserve. The Association recognises and supports the valuable contribution these officers continue to make in strengthening Defence Forces capability.
The recent growth and renewed emphasis on the First Line Reserve is closely linked to the recommendations arising from the Commission on the Defence Forces, which highlighted the importance of developing reserve capacity and making greater use of the skills and experience available among former members of the Permanent Defence Force.
The attached Government Circular, 51/1979 Leave for attendance at training with the Reserve Defence Force, which remains in force, may be of particular interest to retired PDF officers who have subsequently taken up employment within the Civil Service or wider Public Service. The Circular provides for up to nine days of special leave with pay annually to enable eligible employees to participate in approved Reserve Defence Force activities. This support mechanism helps facilitate continued reserve service while balancing professional and public service commitments. ARCO encourages members who may be interested in re-engaging with the Defence Forces through the First Line Reserve to familiarise themselves with the provisions of the Circular and the opportunities that reserve service can offer.
