Comdt Michael O’Sullivan RIP

RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Commandant Michael O’Sullivan, Fuhir, Castletownbere, County Cork on1st September 2025 in the excellent care of the staff in Castletownbere Community Hospital after a short illness. Predeceased by his parents Jeremiah and Hannah, brothers and sisters Mary, Anna Mai, Margaret, Teresa, John, Monica, Padraig and Celia. Mourned by his sister Carmel (California) and his sister-in-law Ita, his nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, great grandnieces and nephews, and his Defence Forces comrades.

Michael O’Sullivan was born on 14th October 1941 in Castletown, County Cork. He enlisted in the Defence Forces as a member of 35 Cadet Class on 31st January 1961 and was commissioned into the Army Corps of Signals on 23rd July 1962. Michael served in a wide variety of appointments in the Corps, including initially with 2 Field Signals Company in Collins Barracks, Dublin, with the School of Signals in the Curragh, and the Air Squadron Signals in Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, from where he completed a specialised course in Ground Radar in Somerset, England.  He served in the Army Apprentice School in Naas, County Kildare and was Officer Commanding 2 Field Signals Company from 1978 to 1981. Michael’s final appointment was with the Observer Corps from where he retired on 1st September 1982 to pursue a career in photography.

Reposing at Harrington’s Funeral Home in Castletownbere on Wednesday 3rd September from 5.00pm to 7.00pm, after which Michael will be taken to his home in Fuhir where he will spend the night. Requiem Mass on Thursday, September 4th, at 11.00am in the Church Of The Sacred Heart, Castletownbere, followed by Cremation Service at 4pm in the Island Crematorium, Ringaskiddy, County Cork. Funeral cortège will leave Michael’s home in Fuhir at approximately 10.30am.
