The following are the details of Captain Donal Egan, whose passing we regretfully missed.
Donal, of Sydenham Court, Ballsbridge, Dublin and formerly of Castlepollard, County Westmeath, and Kells, County Kilkenny, passed away on 29th February 2024, peacefully, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny, with Sheelagh at his side and surrounded by his family. Donal will be sadly missed by Sheelagh, his son Carl, grandchildren Joe and Grace, daughter in law Mary, nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.

Donal Egan enlisted in the Defence Forces as a member of the 27 Cadet Class (1953 – 1954) and was commissioned into the Transport Corps on 6th December 1954. He served in Corps appointments mostly in the Eastern Command in Collins Barracks, Dublin. Donal attended Kings Inns as a part-time student and, having been called to the Bar, retired from the Defence Forces to pursue a legal career as a barrister. One of the notable appointments he held was as a member of the Refugee Appeals Tribunal. Donal played rugby with Monkstown FC and was a long-time member of Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club.
Donal’s funeral took place at St. Michael’s Church, Castlepollard, County Westmeath on Saturday (March 2nd) with 10 o’clock Requiem Mass and burial afterwards in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Castlepollard.
