Lt Col Charlie Cunningham RIP

RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Charles (Charlie) Cunningham, Templeville Road, Templeogue, Dublin 6W and formerly of Aughera, Carrick, County Donegal. On 6th February 2024, peacefully, in the care of the wonderful staff of Saint Vincent’s Hospital following the excellent care received in Brabazon House Nursing Home, Sandymount.

Beloved husband of the late Noelle, loving and much-loved dad of Dónal and Ruairí. Charlie will be forever loved and deeply missed by his sons, daughters-in-law Denise and Orla, his adored grandchildren Darragh, Oscar, Aidan, and Etain, brothers Connell and Eamonn, sister Lucy (McNiocaill), sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law especially Bebe and Mac, nieces, nephews, extended family, relatives, Defence Forces comrades and friends.

Charlie is now re-united with his beloved Noelle and sister Mary.

Charlie Cunningham was born in Aughera, Carrick, County Donegal on 4th June 1939 and completed his primary education in the local national school where his father was principal. Having completed his secondary education in Saint Eunan’s, Letterkenny, he took a Bachelor of Engineering degree in University College Dublin and was commissioned as a direct entry officer in the Corps of Engineers on 6th September 1965. Initially posted to 2 Maintenance Engineer Company in Dublin, Charlie went on to serve in a wide variety on Corps appointments, including the Army Apprentice School, the Command and Staff School, and the Office of the Director of Engineering. Overseas Charlie served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus with 11 Infantry Group in 1968, with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon as Assistant Chief Engineer Officer, and in Croatia/Bosnia with the European Community Humanitarian Office providing aid to refugees in 1995. Charlie retired from the Defence Forces in 2000.

Removal from Massey Brothers Funeral Home, Templeogue Village, D6W AC82 this Saturday morning to Saint Pius X Church, Templeogue arriving for 10am Requiem Mass. Cremation Service thereafter in the Victorian Chapel, Mount Jerome Crematorium, Harolds Cross at 12.15 pm.
