Capt Hugh O’Neill RIP

RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Captain Hugh O’Neill of Market Square, Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare, W91K5F1, on 30th July 2023, in the loving care of the staff of the Ardeen Cheshire Nursing Home, Shillelagh County Wicklow. Adored husband of Áine, and father of Aaron, Megan, Cian, Niall, and Ella. He will be dearly missed by son-in-law Paul, daughter-in-law Eileen, brother Lieutenant-Colonel John (54 Cadet Class 1978-1979), sister Maura, extended family and his many loyal friends and Defence Forces comrades. Predeceased by Nellie and parents Tom and Joan.

Hugh (Hughie as he was affectionately known throughout the Defence Forces) O’Neill was reared on the Green Road in Newbridge, County Kildare, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Tom and Joan O’Neill and the brother of Lieutenant-Colonel John O’Neill. He enlisted in the Defence Forces as a member of 57 Cadet Class (1980-1982) and was commissioned into the Infantry Corps on 5th April 1982. Hughie served in An Chéad Chathlán Coisithe in Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa and with 3 Infantry Battalion (The Bloods) in the old Curragh Command. He also served in the Army Apprentice School in Naas and was an instructor in Information Technology in the School of Administration. Hughie served overseas in Lebanon with 63 Infantry Battalion UNIFIL from May to October 1988. A prominent rugby player and athlete during his school days in Newbridge College, he played rugby with the Defence Forces Team, Bective Rangers FC, Curragh RFC and coached with Naas RFC.

Reposing at his home on Wednesday from 4.00 pm to 8.00 pm. Funeral on Thursday to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ballymore Eustace, arriving for 12.00 pm Funeral Mass followed by burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ballymore Eustace.
